O longa-metragem Life segue os passos do ator James Dean e fotógrafo Dennis Stock meses antes do acidente do ícone do cinema.


Não é um filme biográfico, mas é focado na relação intensa e essencial entre Dennis Stock e estrela James Dean. Life conta a história de Stock (estrelado por Robert Pattinson), que então trabalhava para a agência de fotografia Magnum e recebeu a missão de fotografar Dean (Dane DeHaan), uma promissora estrela de Hollywood, pouco antes da estréia de seu filme East of Eden de Elia Kazan.


Dean morreu em 30 de setembro de 1955, em um acidente quando ele estava dirigindo seu carro. Com sua morte o jovem ator tornou-se um mito. Mas para isso algumas imagens foram usadas para adorar, para recordar sua essência fora das câmeras.


Dean tinha 23 anos e Stock 26 quando se conheceram em uma festa organizada pelo Diretor Nicholas Ray (Rebelde sem causa). Ambos entraram uma amizade íntima durante o trabalho fotográfico, especialmente quando eles viajaram de Los Angeles para Nova Iorque e depois para a fazenda da família do ator em Indiana. Stock conseguiu fotos muito pessoais, familiares e que magistralmente retrataram o caráter e a personalidade do lendário ator, que até então não tinha sido mostrado com tanta sinceridade.

As imagens obtidas por Stock, quase sete meses antes do acidente e publicadas na revista Life em março de 1955, mostra uma relação de interesses em primeiro lugar, e amizade depois, entre o ator, quando era pouco conhecido, e o fotógrafo.

O diretor

No 60º aniversário da morte de James Dean, o cineasta e fotógrafo holandês, Anton Corbijn, apresenta seu quarto filme. Sua estréia foi Control (2007) quando ele capturou os demônios dentro do vocalista do Joy Division, Ian Curtis. Em 2010, dirigiu George Clooney em The American e Philip Seymour Hoffman no A Most Wanted Man (2014), mas Corbijn é conhecido por ser responsável pelas imagens de discos de bandas famosas como Depeche Mode e U2, ou dirigir documentários e clipes de vídeo a partir desses e outros grupos musicais, bem como artistas como Bryan Adams e Tom Waits. Ele também tem uma reputação como um fotógrafo de moda e celebridades.

Sua paixão pela música é o que mais caracteriza Corbijn. "Mas como um fotógrafo, me interessava contar a posição adaptada de Dean e Stock em seu relacionamento, esse equilibrio entre o fotógrafo e seu indivíduo. Isso me permitiu entrar na história pela minha própria perspectiva como fotógrafo de celebridades, que me pareceu que fazia todo o sentido", disse ele.


Para Corbijn, a aproximação entre o ator e Stock é o que a mais ele queria enfatizar, insiste que não é uma biografia do ator. "Ele conseguiu capturar suas fotos através de um James Dean inédito até agora. Ele entrou em seu espaço privado e conseguiu imagens pessoais. E depois há a relação que se estabelece entre eles, e de como cada um se influencia, embora não deem conta. Estas pequenas nuances, muito sutis, são aqueles que eu queria capturar. Eu não queria transmitir nenhuma mensagem sobre James Dean", disse o diretor.

A música, novamente, tem um papel fundamental dentro da história. O jovem compositor canadense Owen Pallett, que também compôs para The Box (2009), The Wait (2013) e Her (2013) - que foi nomeado para um Oscar em 2014... "Em Life a composição é caracterizado pelo Jazz, mas muito minimalista. James Dean amava jazz e simboliza esse período de mudança, quando os brancos começaram a ir aos clubes de negros, "diz Corbijn.


Anton Corbijn vê atrás do ícone outra possibilidade, uma história sobre a amizade e intercâmbio cultural. Os atores

Pattinson diz que a maneira de atuação de James Dean era incrível e foi bastante revolucionária em seu tempo. Além disso, sua imagem de estrela atormentada, "era apenas uma campanha publicitária que saiu muito bem".

Em uma entrevista para Sensacine, Pattinson diz que "nunca tinha ouvido falar sobre Stock, mas quando comecei a investigar, percebi que suas fotos de hippies e outros são bem conhecidas. Mas ele permanece desconhecido até mesmo para fotógrafos. É uma questão inimaginável embora tenha obras magníficas como profissional."(declarações de Europa Press).


Aos 29 anos, Dane DeHaan tornou-se um dos mais requisitados atores de Hollywood depois de surpreender com apostas arriscadas como Kill Your Darlings, agora se atreve a entrar na pele de seu ídolo, James Dean. Para ele tem sido um tema muito interessante e ele confessou que apreciou entrar na pele de alguém normal que se tornou um ícone. "Desde que eu vi seus filmes, para mim se tornou um dos meus atores favoritos, pelo que fez em sua época, pela revolução".


Dean fez apenas três filmes, mas DeHaan acredita que seu legado serve como exemplo para atores atuais. "Elas eram interpretações fabulosas, realistas, fundamentadas, humanas. Era uma pessoa muito sensível e muito talentosa."

The film Life follows in the footsteps of actor James Dean and photographer Dennis Stock months before the film icon of the accident.
