The film Life follows in the footsteps of actor James Dean and photographer Dennis Stock months before the film icon of the accident.
It's not a biopic, but focuses on intense and essential relationship between Dennis Stock and star James Dean. Life tells the story of Stock (starring Robert Pattinson), who then worked for the Magnum photo agency and was assigned to shoot Dean (Dane DeHaan), a promising Hollywood star, just before the premiere of his East of Eden movie Elia Kazan.
Dean died on September 30, 1955, in an accident when he was driving his car. With his death the young actor became a myth. But for some images that were used to worship, to remember its core off-camera.
Dean was 23 and 26 Stock when they met at a party hosted by director Nicholas Ray (Rebel Without a Cause). Both entered a close friendship during the photographic work, especially when they traveled from Los Angeles to New York and then to the actor's family farm in Indiana. Stock got very personal photos, family and masterfully portrayed the character and personality of the legendary actor, who until then had not been shown so sincerely.
The images obtained by Stock, nearly seven months before the accident and published in Life magazine in March 1955, shows a list of interests first, and then friendship between the actor when he was little known, and the photographer.
The director
On the 60th anniversary of the death of James Dean, filmmaker and Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn, presented his fourth film. His debut was Control (2007) when he captured the demons within the lead singer of Joy Division, Ian Curtis. In 2010, he directed George Clooney in The American and Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Most Wanted Man (2014), but Corbijn is known to be responsible for the images of famous bands disks as Depeche Mode and U2, or directing documentaries and video clips From these and other musical groups and artists such as Bryan Adams and Tom Waits. It also has a reputation as a fashion photographer and celebrity.
His passion for music is what most characterizes Corbijn. "But as a photographer, I'm interested in telling the adapted position of Dean and stock your relationship, this balance between the photographer and his subject. This allowed me to get into the story from my own perspective as a celebrity photographer, who seemed to me that it made perfect sense, "he said.
For Corbijn, the proximity between the actor and Stock is what more he wanted to emphasize, he insists that is not an actor's biography. "I managed to capture their photos through a James Dean unpublished until now. He went into his private room and got personal images. And then there is the relationship that is established between them, and how each influences, but do not give account. These small nuances, very subtle, are the ones that I wanted to capture. I did not want to convey any message about James Dean, "said the director.
The music, again, plays a key role within the story. The young Canadian composer Owen Pallett, who also composed for The Box (2009), The Wait (2013) and Her (2013) - which was nominated for an Oscar in 2014 ... "In Life composition is characterized by Jazz, but very minimal. James Dean loved jazz and symbolizes this period of change, when the whites started going to black clubs, "says Corbijn.
Anton Corbijn see behind the icon another possibility, a story about friendship and cultural exchange. Two artists who are known: a successful photographer and a rebel actor at the height of his greatness and tragedy. An odd couple, whose difficult relationship gave some of the most iconic images of a new generation of disaffected youth and a new type of star. "I think Dean get along with Stock, and then were enjoying the photos they were doing. This relationship has swung between the arrogant attitude of the actor, in the film admits there is a family that the photographer followed him 'like a dog', and Photographer firm response, such as the scene where Dean tells Stock that will finally stop being photographed, but these replies, 'I'm the one helping you,' "says the director.
The actors
